Troubleshooting
Start with the summary at the top of Settings → Connection. It reports either "connection is healthy" or "N items need attention", lists the items that need attention, and gives a suggested action for each.
Connection status
Expand Settings → Connection → Connection status to see six checks:
| Check | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Local network | Local interfaces and the QUIC listener |
| Device discovery | Whether mDNS/Bonjour is working |
| Device identity protection | Whether the long-term device key can be read from the system credential store |
| Client version | Current version and protocol capabilities |
| Clipboard sync | Whether it is enabled and usable |
| Self-hosted relay | Whether it is enabled and connected |
No devices found
- Confirm both devices are on the same network and both have Neloa open.
- Look at the devices screen hint. "Searching for nearby and relay devices" means discovery is still running; "device discovery is unavailable" means it is not, so check Device discovery under Connection status.
- On Windows, check whether the firewall allows Neloa on private and public networks.
- iOS and recent macOS releases ask for Local Network permission on first run; if it was declined, re-enable it in system settings. Seeing a device followed by a pairing timeout usually means discovery is visible while Local Network privacy or the firewall blocks UDP 48631.
- Android needs working Wi-Fi. Neloa holds the mDNS multicast lock while the app is alive, but local discovery cannot work when the device is only on cellular. Wi-Fi Direct also needs Nearby devices permission on Android 13+ or location permission on Android 12 and earlier.
A device appears, but pairing times out
- Check the route selected on the device card. Local-network mode requires direct reachability; Wi-Fi Direct requires two nearby Android devices; Bluetooth requires nearby macOS/iOS devices with permission granted; relay mode requires both devices to be connected to the same relay with the same token.
- Allow Neloa to access the Local Network in iOS/macOS settings, and allow inbound Neloa connections in the macOS/Windows firewall.
- Local transfers use UDP 48631. Successful mDNS/Bonjour discovery only proves that UDP 5353 works; it does not prove that the transfer port is allowed.
- If guest-network or client isolation blocks LAN traffic, select Relay on the device card and pair again.
Android Wi-Fi Direct is unavailable
- Wi-Fi Direct currently works only between Android devices. The option remains unavailable on desktop and iOS.
- Keep Wi-Fi enabled and Neloa in the foreground on both devices. Grant Nearby devices on Android 13+, or grant location and enable system location services on Android 12 and earlier.
- The device card enables this route only after native Wi-Fi Direct discovery sees the peer. Seeing a peer through the relay does not mean it is nearby.
- Android may show a Wi-Fi Direct confirmation. Rejection, a busy device, or a wait longer than 45 seconds fails explicitly; Neloa never switches to LAN or relay automatically.
Apple Bluetooth is unavailable
- The current Bluetooth path supports macOS and iOS. Both devices must grant Neloa Bluetooth access on first launch; re-enable it under Privacy & Security in system settings after a denial.
- The device card enables Bluetooth only after the BLE identity has been read. Discovery polls nearby Neloa devices, so a newly launched peer may take one scan cycle to appear.
- Once selected, the session stays on BLE and never falls back to LAN or relay. Search or connection attempts end with an error after 45 seconds.
- BLE is suitable for test text, clipboard content, and smaller files, but is much slower than LAN QUIC. Prefer LAN, Wi-Fi Direct, or relay for large files.
A device shows "incompatible version"
The two protocol ranges do not overlap, or the peer lacks a capability this operation needs. Updating the other device's Neloa resolves it. Older builds are treated as protocol 0 and receive an actionable notice instead of entering a pairing or transfer flow.
A transfer fails or stalls
- Cancel it in the transfer panel and send again.
- Failed sends keep a Retry button in the history screen.
- For large files, confirm neither device went to sleep and the network did not change mid-transfer.
- If the sender stays on "waiting for the peer to accept", the receiver has not confirmed that file — the receiving side never saves automatically.
The relay will not connect
- Confirm the address starts with
wss://and ends with/v1/ws. - Confirm both devices use exactly the same token.
- Confirm the reverse proxy forwards HTTPS to
127.0.0.1:8787with a valid certificate. - Check the Self-hosted relay entry under Connection status. Even when the relay fails, local transfers keep working.
Clipboard sync does nothing
- Confirm the switch is on and that the most recent event below it shows a record.
- Text above 8 KB, or matching a sensitive-content marker, is not sent by design.
- On mobile, sync only runs while the app is in the foreground.
- Content already on the clipboard when you enable the feature is not sent; only newly copied text is.
